Grant Description
This opportunity provides Federal financial assistance to help prevent the extinction and aid in the recovery of the Attwater's prairie chicken (APC). The purpose of the Endangered Species Act is to provide a means by which the ecosystems upon which endangered and threatened species depend may be conserved, to provide a program for the conservation of these species, and to take appropriate steps to achieve the purposes of treaties and conventions set forth in the law. This opportunity is limited to projects carrying out actions described in the species' approved recovery plan, in the implementation schedule of the species' approved recovery plan, and actions recommended in completed 5 year status review of the species. Authorizing statues include Endangered Species Act of 1973, 16 U.S.C. 1531 et. seq, as amended; Public Law 93 205, 87 Stat. 884, Endangered Species Act Amendments of 1978, Public Law 95 632, 92 Stat. 3751, and Endangered Species Act Amendments of 1982, Public Law 97 304, 96 Stat. 1411. The APC is a critically endangered grouse found in the coastal prairie of Texas. Currently, about 100 birds exist in the wild. Efforts to propagate and release APCs into the wild have been ongoing since 1992 and 1996, respectively. Monitoring of released birds is critical to understanding recovery limitations and in managing the species in the wild. Monitoring efforts and other recovery actions are carried out through the use of youth service organizations.
