Grant Description
This intent of the award is to Regulate Shorebird Hunting in the Caribbean and South America. The award is issued to provide financial assistance: Understand shorebird harvest policies, determine harvest sustainability, and provide mitigation measures for shorebird hunting among the jurisdictions of the Caribbean Sea and northern South America. Providing shooting-free reserves in the area where the shorebird harvest occurs is a viable strategy to reduce mortality. Shooting-free reserves provide alternative feeding and resting refugia to migratory birds. The greatest challenge (and cost) at the refugia is to prevent flooding of the кfeeding trayк which make it near useless for shorebirds. Current management is labor intensive and involves extensive annual maintenance and monitoring. Funds will pay for salaries to maintain the refugia and equipment rental for maintenance and improvements.
