Grant Description

The purpose of the Lamprey Summit III is to keep the inertia going on conservation progress and solidify partner commitments. These are the objectives of the Summit: 1. Joint Commitment to Lamprey Restoration пThe FWS is working closely with the Columbia River Treaty Tribes, as well as tribes from coastal Oregon and Washington and California, in the development and implementation of the Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative. Lamprey Summit III will build upon the progress made at the first two Summits where the importance of Pacific Lamprey to the tribes was emphasized and a call for implementation actions was announced. By facilitating the Lamprey Summit III the Service will continue to meet work jointly with the tribes to conserve Pacific Lamprey and address their primary concern that restoration actions are implemented swiftly. 2. Inform Summit participants on the latest information on Pacific Lamprey such as: state of Serviceуs Pacific Lamprey Conservation Initiative, Tribal Pacific Lamprey Restoration Plan for the Columbia River Basin, the Army Corps of Engineers 10- Year Lamprey Passage Plan, the IDFG Lamprey Plan and perhaps others. The Summit will be a good vehicle for disseminating information obtained through these planning processes which is a primary objective of the Serviceуs Conservation Initiative. 3. Solidify commitment to lamprey conservation through a Conservation Agreement. The Summit is a good mechanism for solidifying a commitment from our partners on a Conservation Agreement for Pacific Lamprey. There will be a ceremonial signing of the Conservation Agreement which meets our commitment to the Tribes and other resource agencies to conserve Pacific Lamprey. 4. Regional Implementation Plans п The majority of feedback from our partners on the Serviceуs Initiative was to begin implementation of restoration. To that end we have advanced the concept of developing Regional Implementation plans. The Summit will provide the opportunity to initiate discussions of prioritization and implementation of conservation actions and research at the regional scale.
