Grant Description
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), hereby requests applications from non-profit organizations to enhance the prominence of underground facility construction design, management, and emerging technologies that will facilitate the prevention of pipeline damage caused by demolition, excavation, tunneling or construction activities. Excavation damage continues to be a leading cause of serious pipeline incidents. PHMSA has implemented a broad array of strategies to reduce the risk of excavation damage to pipelines. PHMSA is a Platinum Member of the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), in which stakeholders work collaboratively to improve damage prevention. We fund research and development to bring new technologies to market for improving underground facility locating and encroachment detection. We provide grants to State agencies to support the implementation of effective damage prevention programs at the State level. All of these efforts produce near-term or immediate reductions in excavation damage risk. In this grant opportunity, PHMSA requests applications to improve knowledge of safe underground facility construction techniques and emerging technologies available to detect, locate and avoid existing underground facilities. For complete details regarding this grant opportunity refer to the attachment, entitled “DTPH56-09-SN-0004 – Technology Development Grant Opportunity”, under the full announcement tab.
