Only U.S. academic institutions are eligible to apply. Other Federal agencies, Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) Contractors, and nonprofit organizations described in section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 that engaged in lobbying activities after December 31, 1995 are not eligible to apply. The Principal Investigator must be an untenured Assistant Professor or an untenured Associate Professor on the tenure track at a U.S. academic institution as of the deadline for the application. No more than ten (10) years can have passed between the year the Principal Investigator's Ph.D. was awarded and the year of the deadline for the application. For the present competition, those who received doctorates no earlier than 2001 are eligible.
