Grant Description

The objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to secure proposals that will support the Innovations for Existing Plants (IEP) Programs effort on developing advanced technologies for CO2 capture and purification that can be retrofitted to existing pulverized-coal (PC) power plants and also be applicable to new PC plants. The overall technical and cost goal of FOA is the development of CO2 capture and separation technologies that can achieve at least 90% CO2 removal from the flue gas stream at no more than a 35% increase in cost of electricity (COE) produced at the plant. The FOA seeks technologies at either the bench-scale or pilot-scale phase of development in the following Areas of Interest: Solvents, Sorbents, and Membranes. Funding of projects at these scales of development is critical to achieving the milestones of having advanced technologies available for demonstration-scale in the 2016 timeframe that could be ready f or commercial applications after 2020. The selected projects will support the DOEs Energy Security, Scientific Discovery and Innovation, and Environmental Responsibility strategic goals by seeking to develop technologies that reduce the dependence on foreign sources of oil and facilitate opportunities to mitigate CO2 emissions from the fossil fuel based electricity industry as well as other industrial sources that emit CO2. Bench-Scale Development and Testing for Post-Combustion CO2 Capture areas of interest: Solvent-based Systems; Sorbent-based Systems; Membrane-based Systems and Slipstream Pilot-Scale Testing for Post-combustion CO2 Capture areas of interest: Solvent-based Systems and Sorbent-based Systems.
