Grant Description

The objective of this FOA is to request applications for research leading to innovative and advanced technologies that address CO2 geologic storage in all reservoir types and all life cycle phases of CO2 geologic storage operations (Core R&D Focus Area (2), Geologic Storage). Geologic sequestration involves the injection of CO2 into underground reservoirs that have the ability to securely contain it over long periods of time. The primary objective of Program research is to develop technologies to cost-effectively and safely store and monitor CO2 in geologic formations and to ensure storage permanence. Research is concentrated on five types of geologic formations, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities. These formations include depleted oil and gas reservoirs, deep saline formations, unmineable coal seams, oil and gas rich organic shales, and basalts. The Core R&D Focus area (2), Geologic Storage, aims to address the challenges of CO2 storage in these five reservoirs. Critical challenges/uncertainties identified in this Focus Area include CO2 injectivity, plume migration, storage capacity, and containment system effectiveness. Research pathways to improve understanding and address these challenges include: reservoir types and rock properties; dynamic fluid flow; pressure migration; trapping mechanisms; geochemical reactions; geomechanical and petrophysical characterization; seal integrity; and well integrity. Applications submitted in response to this FOA will address these key challenges of CO2 sequestration in geologic formations by developing innovative technologies and approaches through one of more of the research pathways. The selected projects will support the Carbon Sequestration Programs efforts to develop technologies that demonstrate 99% storage permanence and estimate capacity within +30%. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) has two (2) Areas of Interest aimed at addressing technology gaps in Core R&D Focus area (2), Geologic Storage. Each Area of Interest is identified as: Area of Interest 1 - Applied Science and Engineering Studies for Proof-of-Feasibility; and Area of Interest 2 - Prototype Development and Test. Applications should clearly identify the technical topic area of interest which best fits the majority of the effort to be performed. Do not submit an identical application under more than one area of interest. NOTE:The title provided in the SF424 and all other documents must specify the Area of Interest. The required format for the title will be: Area [X] (project title)
