This Task Force assembled in January 2007 with the mission of developing recommendations to promote optimal care for the critically ill during a mass disaster. The manuscripts that resulted from this meeting helped advance mass critical care surge capacity and standards of care planning in the U.S. and internationally. However, there is a need for expansion of topics discussed to provide information for a variety of patient populations to include pediatric, nephrology, trauma, and obstetrics groups; lessons learned from the H1N1 influenza pandemic and other recent disasters such as earthquakes, tornados, and hurricanes; disaster planning at the State level; surge capacity and reallocation of scarce resources; and key issues with disaster medicine.
