The National Health Act of 2004 of South Africa states that only one license is issued for the practice of blood transfusion in the country. South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is the current license holder and is authorized to operate in eight of the nine provinces in South Africa and is responsible for the delivery of the transfusion service to 87% of the patients of the country, while the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service (WPBTS) is licensed to operate in the Western Cape Province. Thus, by legislative authority, SANBS is the only organization which may collect blood or blood products for the purpose of medical transfusion or related services. Indeed, it is illegal under South African law for any other organization to directly provide the aforementioned services.
