The National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) is the only institution mandated by the Government of Tanzania (Mainland) to carry out blood transfusion services in the country. It was established in the year 2004 with the goal of ensuring safe and sufficient blood supplies for the country. Previously blood was obtained solely from family replacement donors at fragmented hospital-based transfusion units that lacked a standardization of procedures. The policy guidelines on blood transfusion (2006) recommended a shift from hospital based transfusion services to a centralized system which would later be semi-autonomous and independent. This system ensures standardization with improved quality of blood supplies and thus less transmission of HIV and other STIs. It also ensures that the same standard operating procedures (SOPs) are used nationally in the various blood transfusion centers. It is therefore necessary for this work to be coordinated by NBTS under the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
