Grant Description

The purpose of this program is to provide technical assistance to the Government of Botswana (GOB) to develop and implement strategic and multi-faceted HIV prevention communication campaigns. The campaigns will include the strategic use of advocacy, media, interpersonal and dialogue-based communication, and social mobilization to systematically accelerate change in the underlying drivers of HIV risk and vulnerability, as defined by the National Strategic Framework II (NSFII). The awardee will create at least one campaign focusing on a biomedical intervention and one on behavioral drivers. These campaigns may include an HIV testing and counseling initiative focused on knowing one’s HIV status and the status of one’s sexual partner(s), reducing alcohol abuse and raising awareness of gender-based violence. The awardee will also provide guidance on the improvement and evaluation of the on-going multiple concurrent partnerships (MCP) campaign. The applicant will be expected to work collaboratively with GOB to identify appropriate themes, conduct assessments, modify the campaign as needed and measure key behavioral outcomes pre- and post-campaigns. The result of the campaigns will contribute to a significant measurable: (a) increase in HIV knowledge and individual risk perception around campaign themes; (b) reduction of harmful societal norms; and (c) reduction of high-risk sexual behaviors.
