Grant Description
The purpose of this FOA is to support ongoing implementation of the Caroline Pryce Walker Conquer Childhood Cancer Act by enhancing central cancer registry infrastructure to facilitate early case capture (ECC) of pediatric cancer cases within weeks of diagnosis. This project was previously funded through DP11-1107, a 3-year FOA. This new FOA will allow for ongoing enhancement and possible expansion to additional grantees, who will establish methods for rapid reporting, primarily through the use of electronic reporting from all sources of PYAC cases, including large out-of-state childrenуs hospitals. Grantees will implement procedures to monitor and ensure data quality, completeness and timeliness, submit PYAC data to CDC bi-annually, and increase availability of this data for surveillance, epidemiology, and research at the local, state, and national level. By the end of this 5-year project period, grantees will achieve the primary outcomes including increased facility knowledge of PYAC ECC and ability to report an increased percent of cases within 30 days of diagnosis, increased researcher access to more timely PYAC cancer data, and more evidence-based decisions by PYAC healthcare providers, programs, and key stakeholders. In the long-term, these project period outcomes will lead to increased knowledge of PYAC etiology, treatment efficacy, and late effects of specific cancers, increased public health interventions and clinical trial enrollment, and ultimately decreased PYAC incidence and mortality and increased survival.
