Grant Description

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Division of Natural Heritage (VADCR-DNH) will compile a regional dataset of approximately 1130 Southern Appalachian plots from Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia south of the James and Jackson Rivers and analyze those data using quantitative methods, and refine the USNVC based on the results of these analyses. NatureServe will provide to VADCR-DNH compositional, environmental, and classification data for 181 Appalachian National Scenic Trail (APPA) corridor plots and approximately 370 supplementary plots from West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia from various data sources. VADCR-DNH will provide data for 148 Appalachian National Scenic Trail (APPA) corridor plots and approximately 420 supplementary plots from Virginia. National Park Service (NPS) staff and NatureServe project managers and subcontractors will consult with DCR-DNH ecologists on classification issues that arise during the project and participate in a formal classification review meeting, where the classification to be used to map the southern portion of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (APPA) will be finalized.
