Grant Description
The South Spit is currently in a severely degraded vegetative condition with the majority of the area consisting of invasive, non-native plant species. European beachgrass, iceplant, and yellow bush lupine now dominate the foredunes where once they were absent. Native species were present on the South Spit in the 1940’s but not uniformly distributed or abundant due to wave over-wash events that maintained the sands in an actively moving state over much of the area. The establishment of these invasive plant species has interrupted the functioning of natural systems on the South Spit, causing the stabilization of foredunes by beachgrass and eliminated low-gradient shifting dunes.
