Grant Description

The Bureau of Land Management, Wyoming State Office, intends to enter into a cooperative agreement with Sinte Gleska University to enable a federally-recognized Tribal University to utilize the BLM?s National Historic Trails Interpretive Center to represent historic Native American tribal views of European emigration into and through the High Plains and Rocky Mountain West during the period 1840-1890. The result will be a more balanced interpretive program at this BLM-administered site, thereby fostering an inclusive, accurate view of the shaping of the American West and the broader cultural consequences among minority populations as a result. The project in both scope and effect is consistent with internal policy requirements of the Bureau of Land Management as expressed in its Manual Section 8170, titled Interpreting Cultural Resources For The Public. While specific deliverables have not been identified, it is anticipated that the recipient will pursue the production of temporary exhibits and in-person tribal interpretation as two potential methods for presenting Native American views. The anticipated length of the project is a one year period. The BLM will consider continued funding for the project upon (a) the recipient showing progress satisfactory to the BLM toward program goals and the determination by the BLM that continuation of the program would be in the best interest of the Government or (b) the availability of funds. The total project period for this award will not exceed 12 months.
