This is a single source award to Michigan Technological University, Houghton, MI. MTU is home to Isle Royale's internationally-acclaimed ecological research on wolves and moose, as well as several other realms of research that are critical to the Park, including global climate change, and forest systems analyses. MTU also has a well-established program for teacher professional development and education for diverse K-12 audiences, and an exisitng outreach network to public audiences of interest to the NPS (particularly teachers, diverse communities, underrepresented youth audineces, and other groups who traditionally have had limited access to Isle Royale)

Grant Description

Strategic partnership between Isle Royale National Park and Michigan Technological University (MTU)to jointly develop an education and research center identified as the Isle Royale Institute (IRI). The IRI fosters and facilitates cooperative activities in science, resource management, education and the vision for the future of the environment by providing an atmosphere and facilities which enchance study and thought. In 2009 IRI will prepare a business plan for the IRI, conduct two week-long teacher development courses, develop a pilot high-school student enrichment course based at Isle Royale NP, develop a pilot adult education course based at the Rock Harbor Lodge (Forever Resorts, Inc.) prepare a demonstration project of high-resolution sector scanning sonar for baseline documentation and monitoring of underwater resources, submit several proposalto stimulate the strategic development of research project and re-design the IRI web site to function as a portal to scientific dollaboration and an innovative educational resource.
