Grant Description
This agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology, Tokyo, Japan, will further the Institute’s mission and a goal of the Service to recover the short-tailed albatross. The Yamashina Institute for Ornithology will conduct various activities designed to contribute to the recovery of short-tailed albatross, including: --Continue efforts to establish a nesting colony on Mukojima, by translocating and hand-rearing short-tailed albatross chicks; --Continue efforts to track short tailed albatross chicks fledged from Torishima and Mukojima and albatrosses at sea through satellite telemetry, thus determining travel patterns and identifying potential conflicts with specific commercial fisheries; and --Continue monitoring both short-tailed albatross breeding colonies on Torishima Island.
