Grant Description

U.S. Geological Survey is offering a funding opportunity for research with the goal of improving the geochronological and paleoenvironmental interpretations of unconsolidated sediments, particularly with respect to ostracode and stable-isotope analysis. Detailed reconstruction of the natural variability of paleoclimate and effects on landscapes and vegetation is needed to develop better understanding of the effects of potential future change and to develop sound management practices. This Cooperative Agreement is in support of interactive and collaborative research activities involving the direct participation of both USGS and CESU partner scientists. The CESU partner will coordinate with USGS scientists to design specific research and sampling strategies in support of Quaternary research in the Western United States. Collaboration between USGS and the CESU partner will also include research related to, but not restricted to, Mojave River basin and surrounding areas and to identify the most promising samples for analyses, and may participate in sample collection. Research Objectives are to include, but are not restricted to: • Preparation, identification, and paleoenvironmental interpretation of ostracode assemblages. • Analyses of ostracodes and mollusks for amino acid geochronology. • Preparation and analysis of ostracodes and carbonates for stable isotope analysis (O and C). • Preparation of samples for AMS 14C analysis.
