Grant Description

The U.S. Geological Survey’s is offering a cooperative-agreement opportunity to universities that have the ability to collect, process, and analyze ground-based LiDAR data that meet the objectives listed below. The objectives are to assess the effectiveness of ground-based LiDAR in detecting vegetation and geomorphic change for use in riparian monitoring along large rivers of the Colorado Plateau. In 2010-2011 research will include the following: 1. Collect, process, and analyze ground-based LiDAR data at two locations within Dinosaur National Monument, in conjunction with traditional transect- and plot-based data used to detect channel cross-section and vegetation change. Ground-based LiDAR data also will be used to evaluate the accuracy of existing airborne LiDAR imagery. Data are to be collected at these locations between late July and the end of August in 2010 and 2011. 2. LiDAR data will be processed, analyzed and a short progress report written at the end of each field season (Due by 30 October of each year). 3. Peer-reviewed publications comparing and contrasting ground-based LiDAR monitoring with traditional methods, will be prepared in conjunction with USGS and National Park Service collaborators, throughout the 2 year life of the agreement.
