Grant Description

This opportunity falls under the Ecosystems and Invasive Species programs of the USGS. The funds for this work come from the Cooperative Intermountain Restoration Project and this work is a high priority for understanding ecosystem responses from the invasion of cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) in the intermountain sagebrush steppe. Award Information This opportunity is intended for applicants with the ability to extract DNA and run PCR and T-RFLP on soil samples that will be collected from the Great Basin. To insure the consistency of these results with previous results, the fragment analyses of the T-RFLP samples must be conducted at Oregon State University’s Center for Genome Research and Biocomputing (CGRB) lab or they must show that their independent results will provide results with a 90 % accuracy to those from CGRB. The USGS will provide soil samples for processing and will expect to receive data comparing the saprophytic fungal, AM fungal, and bacterial communities. Analysis and interpretation of these data will be done jointly with the USGS and the successful applicant. The award will be made to the successful applicant using a Cooperative Agreement funded through the Great Basin Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.
