Grant Description

The Recipient is with a department of the University of Indiana who was awarded a Master Cooperative Agreement P14AC00027 allowing Indiana University, on behalf of the National Center on Accessibility to participate in specific tasks, and can provide the necessary activities involved in this particular task while providing an effective outcome for NPS and the objectives of this research/educational project. The National Center on Accessibility, under the RPTS department, is one of the nationŠ¼s premiere resources promoting access for people with disabilities in the park and recreation environment. Over the last 20 years, NCA has played a critical role in increasing awareness of inclusion of people with disabilities in parks, recreation, and tourism while advancing the spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Rehabilitation Act and other disability legislation. Through the comprehensive services of Research, Technical Assistance, and Education, NCA focuses on universal design and practical accessibility solutions creating inclusive recreation opportunities for people of all abilities. NCA links the preferences and needs of people with disabilities to those of practitioners designing facilities and planning programs. Since NCAs inception in 1992, professional such as park superintendents, facility mangers, architects and landscape architects, program coordinators, civil engineers, planners, interpreters and exhibit designers, accessibility coordinators, advocates, and consumers have drawn on NCA as a valued resource. Through this task agreement, NPS agrees to work in collaboration with the NCA to develop the goals for a webinar and a face-to-face program for practitioners designing facilities and planning programs; work with NCA to identify targeted audiences and advertise the programs to those participants; and use lessons learned through programs to be more inclusive of people with disabilities in park and recreation environments, public outreach and education, programs, and opportunities.
