Foundation Grants

What are foundation grants? Well, apart from the federal financial aid that a college student may receive, each university has their own funding set aside to assist financially needy college students. While a small portion of this private funding may come from the federal government, most of its money is comprised of foundation grants and endowments. These grants are the result of the generosity of large corporations, private organizations, and wealthy individuals. Such gifts can have a positive impact on the lives of college students, including you, by making college an affordable option for the less fortunate. They allow a possibility to become a reality.

Many of the corporations who offer foundation grants will also offer individual grants and scholarships. These forms of financial aid can be either financial need based or merit based. The financial need for a student is determined by the U.S. Department of Education based upon the answers you provided in your FAFSA application. Merit based scholarships or grants are given to students in recognition of their academic, artistic, or athletic achievements. Whichever sort of grant you decide to apply for, you can be guaranteed that you will qualify for at least a handful.

The students who apply for these scholarships provided by foundation grants providers must meet specific criteria. The scholarship may require you to be studying within a specific field. You will most likely be required to be a citizen of the United States. You may also be required to be a full time student. The scholarship may take personal characteristics, like your ethnicity, extracurricular activities, age, or gender, into account when selecting recipients for their funding. It may also be required that you must have maintained a certain GPA in high school. The particulars of the criteria will vary widely amongst the providers, and it is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the eligibility requirements.

College is expensive, and the cost of tuition at a four year university is rising each year. Researching the corporations and organizations that provide foundation grants can lead you to discover new scholarships and grants that you may qualify for. One of the major advantages of grants is that the money does not have to be repaid. However, you may be required to refund the money to the grant provider if you do not maintain the academic requirements set forth by your college. Just be smart about the way you spend your time in college and you should be able to get the education of a lifetime without having to pay for it.
