On Monday $10 Million in college grant money was awarded by the Florida Board of Governors to 11 state universities. The money will be split between the schools in Florida’s state university system. Each school will receive government grant money in the six-figure range. The money was awarded as part of the New Florida Initiative, a program aimed at building research partnerships and diversifying the state’s economy by developing a stronger relationship with the state educational system.

The recently awarded college grants will primarily be used to develop research in the areas of science, math, technology, medicine and engineering. That’s why most of the $10 million in funding went to leading research institutes.
The University of Florida was awarded the most in funding, receiving 10 grants by the Board of Governors. The university received a total of $2.5 million in grant money that will be used to focus research on biomedical engineering, climate change and broadband technology. Florida State University was second in funding, receiving $1.3 million. The University of Central Florida was awarded four grants and was the next closest in funding receiving $400,000.

The New Florida Initiative was announced in January by Governor Charlie Crist as a part of a long term plan to boost the state’s economy. The idea behind the college grants was that the money would be used to fund research projects that would in turn develop Florida’s economy into one based on knowledge and innovation. By concentrating efforts on increased financing for higher education the State University System is now in the position to take a leading role in the creation of job opportunities. Therefore, all the residents of Florida will benefit from this investment.

The majority of the college grants went toward funding initiatives that involved state schools teaming up and collaborating on various research projects.
•	UCF will partner with FSU to develop certificate programs to retrain aerospace workers
•	FSU will partner with the University of South Florida to research the geophysics behind major environmental threats
•	UF and Florida A&M will focus their partnership on health-care related efforts
•	The University of North Florida and FSU will collaborate to study prosthetics
•	Three schools (FSU, UF and USF) will combine their efforts to concentrate on the expansion of broadband capabilities across the state

The college grants awarded by the Florida Board of Governors is an investment in the state’s future. By concentrating funds on higher learning the state will bolster economic development.

The government is urging first-time home-buyers to start planning early or risk being passed over for a loan. Government grants for first-time home-buyers are increasing in popularity because of the ease at which these grants are distributed. Moving forward, however, potential home-buyers will have to plan a little farther ahead than before.

Each state or region has its own laws, but they all can provide some sort of grant option with varying grant award amounts. Whether or not these grants are sufficient to buy a home will depend on your need, state laws, and available grant funding.

Preparation to buy a first home can get complicated so it is crucial to follow instructions and append supporting documentation. Applying for a government grant for housing typically requires a fairly grueling application process.

How to Apply for a Housing Grant

Invest in a grant application kit, located below. It is fairly inexpensive considering how much money it can secure for you.

Download all grant applications.

Read the applications thoroughly and fill them out completely and as accurately as possible.

Proved the necessary documentation: identification, rental notices, banking information, etc.

Check the application to make sure there are no mistakes. Double check.

Submit your application electronically or by mail.

In about 4-6 weeks you will receive approval for a housing grant. This money is yours, free-of-charge and never has to be paid back.

Applying for a housing grant is undoubtedly the smartest way to be able to pay for your first home. There is more than enough money to go around for the people who demonstrate genuine need.

President Obama allotted $151 million to an auto-factory in Michigan as part of a stimulus to make electric-battery cars. Obama will also highlight a $2.4 billion stimulus aimed at encouraging the development of such automobiles.

The factory receiving the money is expected to employ over 300 people to produce batteries for companies like General Motors, Ford and Chevrolet. White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer criticized the Republican opposition to this stimulus.

“None of this would have been possible without the Recovery Act,” Pfeiffer said. “If [the Republicans] had their way, we would not be breaking ground. These industries would not be created here,” he said.

The Obama administration has strengthened their defence of the stimulus initiative, which was passed shortly after the president’s inauguration. The administration expects the stimulus package to encourage $280 billion from private investors and local government jobs that will lead to job creation. An administration report released last week said about 3 million jobs have been “saved or created” by the legislation, so far.

Republicans says the stimulus is wasteful, hasn’t reduced unemployment, and is merely contributing to the countries ever-growing deficit.

“The American people have had enough of Washington Democrats’ job-killing spree,” said House Republican Leader John Boehner.

If all goes as planned, this stimulus will help raise the US’s capacity for manufacturing advanced-vehicle batteries from 2% of the market to 40% by 2015.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) gave two grants totaling $1 million to Lockheed Martin to research energy sources between the hot and cold spots of oceans.

May 2010

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) gave two grants totaling $1 million to Lockheed Martin to determine the possibility of harnessing energy found between the hot and cold spots of oceans to generate electricity on a large scale commercial level.

Unlike previous ocean energy grants which have primarily focused on harnessing tidal waves and currents, Lockheed’s research will be based on thermal variances as an energy source of their own, referred to as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Technology (OETC).

Lockheed Martin’s team of scientists and engineers will use half of the money received to develop OETC software and tools that allow them to quickly find these thermal areas of the ocean and accurately assess them for their potential as renewable-energy sources.

The second grant being given to Lockheed will be strictly for their financial team who will be putting together a financial package of cost estimates based on their research on these hot and cold ocean spots. Lockheed Martin will need to determine the scalability, cost, performance, and ultimate potential for large-scale use and commercialization of OTEC technology, all to be included in the package.

An OTEC system uses the temperature difference between solar-warmed surface water and cold, deep water to run a heat engine, which produces electricity. Because the sun continually warms the planet’s oceans, this technology could serve as an inexpensive, clean, renewable source of energy.

This $1 million is merely the latest in a series of grants being awarded to the company. It was awarded $8.12 million last year by the Department of Defense to develop OTEC system components and an OTEC pilot plant.

Clean energy initiatives continue to take preference for funding through the federal government as the need for environmentally sound practices becomes more imminent. President Barack Obama recently approved the DOE budget for the 2011 fiscal year in which they will receive 28.4 billion, including $2.36 billion for the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE).

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the state of California $416 million dollars to turn around dozens of its under-performing public schools.

June 29, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the state of California $416 million dollars to turn around dozens of its under-performing public schools.

This grant award is available for 5% of the state’s public schools who have consistently failed to meet a variety of academic benchmarks.

The money is being awarded by U.S. Department of Education's School Improvement Grants program which hopes to raise academic levels in these 188 schools to appropriate levels.

California school districts can apply for these grants of $50,000 to $2 million for their suffering schools, but must agree to one of four outlined measures in order to be approved.

To get the grants, districts will have to take drastic measures to reform the struggling schools, such as converting to a charter school, replacing the principal, increasing instructional time, firing half the staff or closing entirely and sending students to higher-achieving schools.

Charter schools have proved to be very successful in teaching low-income students and consistently outperform their public counterparts, despite being in some of California’s toughest areas.

Of the 12 top-performing charter schools, five are in Oakland, three in Los Angeles County, two in Santa Clara County, and one each in San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

Charter schools are funded at about 85 percent of the level of traditional public schools and are accountable to parents not unions, and as such are freer to choose teachers and have stricter practices without all the red tape.

Unfortunately this is a voluntary grant program and schools that do not want to make any of these reforms will not be forced.

In fact, because of the drastic measures only 17 schools of the 188 have agreed to go ahead and commit to the reform and take the money.

School boards agreeing to these reforms include Escondido Unified, Santa Ana and San Bernardino Unified to name a few.

Districts that have said ‘thanks, but no thanks’ include Oakland Unified and San Diego. Although they still have a bit more time to change their minds.

In other efforts to improve their schools California is also participating in the Obama $4.35 billion Race to the Top competition.

In the wake of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the company responsible, British Petroleum, has agreed to give $25 million in grants to universities across Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

In the wake of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the company responsible, British Petroleum, has agreed to give $25 million in grants to universities across Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi.

This money is the first of a $500 million commitment to fund research studies on the effects of the spill. It will be distributed according to each university’s unique research needs with USF’s Florida Institute of Oceanography set to receive the most funds with a $10 million grant.

And while the money is being given to certain institutions and research programs it comes with no stipulations as to how exactly the money should be administered within the project.

“BP has no influence on how we do things, the money we get from them will come with no strings attached,” said William Hogarth, dean of the USF College of Marine Science. “We will do science based on science.”

This grant commitment was made after it became apparent that clean up wasn’t being done as efficiently as possible. ‘Right now there are just too many unknowns that are stalling the clean-up process,’ said Hogarth.

Some of the research initiatives that are set to take place include investigations into the effects of oil on marine life and the environment; studies into how oil disperses in a spill and the ecological interactions it has.

The oil spill occurred when the Deepwater Horizon Well exploded April 20 just off the coast of Florida. The well leaked at a rapid rate for well over a month before a temporary cap was finally put on it.

The full damages are yet unknown but experts say they are far worse than anything we have ever seen before. Officials and volunteers are working around the clock to clean up the mess and prevent the spread of the oil and unnecessary contamination of marine life and coastal vegetation.

It is hoped by all that the grant money received by universities will be pivotal in preventing a disaster of this magnitude to happen again.

Forty deserving students in the Sunshine State are anxiously awaiting their grant checks, after being chosen as the first-ever recipients of the Florida Realtors Education Grant.

The Florida Realtors Education Foundation is giving away more than $100,000 to these recent high school grads to help pay for their tuition expenses for the 2010-2011 school year.

Students are set to receive grants of $2,000-$4,000, with the higher denomination going to students pursuing 4-year degrees.

In order to qualify for these awards students must be Florida residents and attending community colleges, four-year universities, graduate programs or law schools. Students do not have to be pursuing a career in real estate, although like-minded individuals are given preference.Other factors for consideration included academic achievements, financial need, relationship to the Realtor family, and contributions to family, school and community.

The Florida Realtors Board of Directors explained that this was their way of giving back to the community. Bob Hudgens, chairman of the foundation said that everyday realtors help individuals and families realize their dreams of home ownership, but this is taking that help even further. By giving young people the tools to study and get an education, they are helping make home ownership possible for them in the future.

Aside from these scholarships, Florida Realtors also sponsors an Essay Scholarship Contest for Florida high school students. To qualify students must write a 500 word essay on a specific topic outlined by the Foundation. Scholarship amounts vary from year to year, but for 2010 the first-place winning entry in each of the state association's 13 Regional Districts receives a $1,000 scholarship; district winners will go on to compete for three $5,000 state-level scholarship awards, for a total of $28,000 in scholarship funding from Florida Realtors.

Florida Realtors is the largest realty group in the State of Florida. It provides programs, services, continuing education, research and legislative representation to its 115,000 members in 67 boards/associations.
